Corrective action

A corrective action is a specific, assigned task that fixes the cause of an incident, complaint, audit finding or identified risk, tracked from when it is raised until it is verified as closed.

Where corrective actions come from

An incident review, a complaint, an internal audit finding, a risk assessment or a regulator’s feedback. In each case the question is the same: what will be done so this does not happen again, who will do it, and by when.

Why closure matters

A corrective action that was agreed and never closed is worse evidence than none, because it shows the provider knew. The record an auditor looks for is the action, its owner, its due date, what was actually done and who confirmed it was done. The regulator for your sector may set expectations for how incidents and complaints are followed up; confirm them there.
