Notifiable incident (WHS)
A notifiable incident is a workplace death, serious injury or illness, or dangerous incident that an employer must notify to the work health and safety regulator in its state or territory under WHS law.
Not the same as a reportable incident
A reportable incident goes to a sector regulator, such as the NDIS Commission, and concerns the people a provider supports. A notifiable incident goes to the work health and safety regulator and concerns workers and the workplace. One event can be both. Each has its own categories, regulator and obligations, and the WHS detail differs by state and territory.
Categories, thresholds and timeframes are set by the regulator and change; confirm the current requirements with the regulator for your sector before acting on a real case.
What to keep
The incident record, the notification and when it was made, and the actions taken afterwards. WHS law also expects the scene of certain incidents to be preserved until an inspector says otherwise; the regulator in your state sets the detail.
