Serious incident (education and care)
In education and care, a serious incident is an event in a defined category, such as a serious injury, illness or trauma to a child, or a child going missing, that an approved service must notify to its state or territory regulatory authority under the National Quality Framework.
Who it goes to
Notification is to the regulatory authority in the service’s state or territory, under the National Quality Framework that ACECQA oversees. The categories, the timeframes and the form of notification are set by the framework and the authority.
Categories, thresholds and timeframes are set by the regulator and change; confirm the current requirements with the regulator for your sector before acting on a real case.
What the service keeps
The incident record made at the time, the notification, the parent or guardian communication, and the follow-up. A service is also expected to keep incident, injury, trauma and illness records in a set form; the regulatory authority can say what applies.
