Worker screening check
A worker screening check is the clearance a worker in a risk-assessed role must hold to work for a registered NDIS provider, issued by the worker screening unit in the worker’s state or territory and recorded nationally.
How it works
The check is applied for through the state or territory worker screening unit, and a registered provider verifies and links the worker’s clearance in the national database. Which roles are risk-assessed, how long a clearance lasts and what happens when a clearance is suspended or revoked are set by the scheme and differ in detail by state.
Categories, thresholds and timeframes are set by the regulator and change; confirm the current requirements with the regulator for your sector before acting on a real case.
What to keep on record
A register of which workers hold which clearances, with expiry, and a reminder before anything lapses. A worker whose clearance has expired, in a role that needs one, is a finding regardless of how good the worker is. The same register usually carries the other checks a role may need, such as a working with children check or a professional registration.
